EatAbout Blog | How to skip the scented candles and make simmer pots of great smelling home

Here are a couple of my favorite simmer pot recipes that are a perfect alternative to scented candles and heavy air fresheners. Perfect for when guests are over or even for a cozy night in. A bonus is that they act as a humidifier on cold, dry winter nights.

The great thing about simmer pots is that you can make them using natural ingredients you can find in your pantry and fridge

These are a couple I use mixtures I like to use, all you do is place them in a pot with water and simmer. Continue to refill with water or juice.

Mix 1:

  • Orange peels
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Whole Cloves
  • Star Anise
  • Nutmeg
  • Fresh Ginger
  • Cardamom Pods
  • Water or Juice

Mix 2:

  • Apple slices or just the peel
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Whole Cloves
  • Star Anise
  • Nutmeg
  • Fresh Ginger
  • Cardamom Pods
  • Water or Juice

Mix 3:

  • Lemon
  • Rosemary
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Water

These are just a couple ideas, but if you want to create your own here are some tips:

  • Citrus fruits have fragrant oils in their peels which is perfect for simmer pots, so try them out. Grapefruit could be a super refreshing with mint or rosemary.

  • Whole herbs and spices hold more natural oils and fragrances, try and use them whole as much as possible.

  • Warm apple cider or mulled wine also make great simmer pots plus you can drink them.

Here are some recipes I like:

And there you have it! An easy, natural home air humidifier and freshner for a cozy home.

A great thing about these is that you can store them in jars for another time or make them as gifts for guests.

Enjoy!
